Life With An Oral Appliance
In New Jersey
What Can You Expect From An Oral Appliance?
- Less Snoring – the appliance promotes adequate air intake and prevents the collapse of the soft tissues of the throat.
- More Energy –Since you’re getting quality, restful sleep at night, you’ll have more energy during the day.
- Portable – Small, sleek and easy to travel with.
- Comfortable to Wear – Your body easily adapts to wearing the appliance.
- Non-Invasive – If you aren’t happy with your oral appliance, simply remove it! Treatment is non-invasive and completely reversible.
- Improved Relationship with Your Spouse – Your spouse won’t have to kick or nudge you repeatedly throughout the night to stop snoring.
The oral appliance allows you to sleep more soundly and feel more rested in the morning and throughout the day. Since you are sleeping quietly, your spouse can get a good night’s rest, too!
If you suffer from sleep apnea, Drs. Ivan & Allan Stein of New Jersey Sleep Apnea Solutions encourage you to explore your treatment options with oral appliance therapy. Many health insurance providers, including Medicare, offer coverage for the oral appliances.
Adjusting To The Appliance
Drs. Ivan & Allan Stein will schedule several appointments for the fitting and placement of your oral appliance. They will ensure that the appliance is easy to wear, making any small adjustments for fit or comfort. For the best results, you should wear the oral appliance nightly and remove it during the day. It should only take a few days to acclimate to wearing the appliance. Drs. Stein will follow up with you biannually or annually to monitor your progress with the appliance.
Possible Oral Appliance Side Effects
If you notice that your jaw is stiff or your teeth do not meet properly first thing in the morning after removing the appliance, do not worry. The jaw should return to its normal position within 10 to 20 minutes. You can help it by chewing gum while taking a hot shower, or by doing gentle jaw exercises. Clench your teeth together, hold for a few seconds and release. Repeat this alternating pattern for about a minute to re-establish joint position and good tooth contact.
How To Care For Your Appliance
Caring for your oral appliance is easy. Drs. Stein recommends you brush it every morning with a toothbrush, then rinse it and return it to its case with the top open. Keep the case at room temperature in a secure location, away from pets or young children, and out of the sun. Twice a week, soak the appliance in a cleaning container with special tablets, to disinfect the appliance. If you notice any chips, cracks or additional damage, contact our office immediately.
